COURSE CURRICULUM

The BSc (Hons) Midwifery at Liverpool John Moores University offers a carefully structured curriculum that develops the knowledge, skills, and professional confidence needed to practise as a midwife. In the first year, students build foundational expertise through modules such as midwifery skills and practice, the fetus and newborn infant, applied sciences for midwives, the childbirth continuum, research and study skills, and an introduction to the public health role of the midwife. These establish the essential clinical, scientific, and academic skills required for safe and effective practice. The second year continues to develop these areas through a similar set of modules, reinforcing key knowledge while allowing students to progress to more complex clinical and theoretical applications in midwifery care. In the final year, the focus shifts to advanced professional practice, with modules covering higher-level midwifery skills, care of the vulnerable newborn, complications in the childbirth continuum, and the broader context of midwifery practice. Students also examine research supporting midwifery and the role of public health in supporting vulnerable families. This progression ensures graduates are not only clinically skilled but also prepared to work in diverse settings, manage complex cases, and contribute to the wider healthcare system with confidence and professionalism.
