COURSE CURRICULUM

The BSc (Hons) Biotechnology program provides a structured and practical approach to developing expertise in modern biotechnology, with a focus on laboratory techniques, molecular processes, and real-world applications. In the first year, students are introduced to microbial biotechnology, building a foundation in the use of microorganisms for industrial, medical, and environmental purposes. The second year expands into more advanced topics such as sterile pharmaceutical products, structural and functional biochemistry, molecular biology, and functional genomics, alongside a strong emphasis on research methods. These modules provide both theoretical understanding and hands-on skills essential for laboratory and industry-based biotechnology work. Optional opportunities include a sandwich year placement or a semester abroad, allowing students to gain valuable international or professional experience. In the final year, the course emphasizes innovation and application, with core modules in biotechnology entrepreneurship and synthetic biology and bioengineering. Students can further tailor their studies through optional modules in industrial product development, microbial technology, work-based learning, or recombinant proteins. A strong balance of science, research, and business ensures that graduates are not only technically skilled but also commercially aware and prepared to contribute to the biotechnology sector across pharmaceuticals, healthcare, agriculture, and environmental industries.
