COURSE CURRICULUM

The BSc (Hons) Biomedical Science degree provides a structured pathway through the study of human bioscience and diagnostic science, combining theoretical learning with practical laboratory experience. In the first year, students build a strong scientific foundation through modules in cell biology, biochemistry, microbiology, genetics, anatomy, physiology, and the fundamentals of biomedical science. The second year advances this knowledge with more applied topics such as clinical biochemistry, immunology, haematology, cellular pathology, and advanced molecular biology, alongside biomedical research methods to develop analytical and investigative skills. Students also have the option to undertake a sandwich year in industry or a study year abroad to enhance employability and broaden their professional experience. The final year focuses on specialist and integrative learning, with modules covering cancer biology, medical and clinical genetics, and advanced clinical immunology and microbiology. A major element of the final year is the honours research project, which allows students to apply their knowledge and skills to an independent investigation. The curriculum is designed to ensure graduates leave with the scientific expertise, research competence, and professional skills needed to pursue careers in biomedical science, healthcare, and research, or progress to further postgraduate study in specialist biomedical fields.
