COURSE CURRICULUM

The BSc (Hons) Biochemistry at Liverpool John Moores University is structured to provide students with a solid foundation in core biochemical sciences before progressing to advanced specialist study and research. In the first year, students develop essential knowledge through modules in physiological biochemistry, molecular biology, cell biology, microbial biotechnology, and structural and functional biochemistry, alongside practical and employability skills. The second year builds on this with modules in metabolic biochemistry, molecular biology and functional genomics, molecular cell biology, structural and functional biochemistry, and advanced laboratory methods. Students also continue their study of microbial biotechnology and have the option to undertake a sandwich placement year or study abroad to gain valuable experience. In the final year, the focus shifts to advanced understanding and independent research, with modules in structural and functional biochemistry, advanced molecular and cell biology, and a major research project in biochemistry or biotechnology. Optional modules allow students to specialise in areas such as microbial technology, neurobiology, genetics in health and disease, cancer biology, or work-based learning. The program combines theoretical study, extensive laboratory training, and opportunities for real-world application, preparing graduates for careers in scientific research, healthcare, biotechnology, or postgraduate study.
