COURSE CURRICULUM

The BEng (Hons) Marine and Mechanical Engineering program at Liverpool John Moores University offers a thorough grounding in engineering principles, combining theoretical knowledge with practical applications and industry-focused learning. In the first year, students study foundational topics including engineering mathematics, applied mechanics, thermodynamics and fluid mechanics, materials, engineering practice, and mechatronics, providing essential technical and analytical skills. The second year builds on this foundation with advanced modules in engineering mathematics, applied mechanics, thermodynamics and fluid mechanics, materials and processes, marine electrical systems, marine design and technology, and modelling and simulation. Students can also opt for a sandwich placement or a study abroad year, gaining practical experience and international exposure to enhance employability and professional development. In the final year, core modules such as the engineering project, industrial management, and marine design and propulsion develop problem-solving, project management, and design skills. Optional modules, including finite element analysis, fluid dynamics and heat transfer, thermodynamics, materials engineering, structural integrity, manufacturing systems, dynamics and control, computational fluid dynamics, and sensors and robotics, allow students to specialise and tailor their learning to career goals. The program’s integration of theory, practical skills, and professional experience ensures graduates are well-prepared for careers in marine and mechanical engineering, with the option to progress to advanced study or industry-focused roles.
