COURSE CURRICULUM

The BA (Hons) History degree at Liverpool John Moores University offers a diverse and engaging curriculum that allows students to study a wide range of historical themes, regions, and periods while developing essential research and critical thinking skills. In the first year, students are introduced to the foundations of historical study through modules on Britain, Europe, the United States, and the British Empire, gaining a broad overview of political, cultural, and social developments. Year 2 builds on this foundation with core modules in historiographical debates and independent research, alongside a wide range of optional modules that explore themes such as the Soviet Union, colonial Africa, Japan’s transformation, supernatural Britain, gender and slavery in the United States, the Middle East, and the Cold War. Opportunities to study abroad or undertake international fieldwork, such as in modern Germany, further enrich the experience. In the final year, students complete a dissertation, showcasing their ability to conduct independent research on a chosen area, while optional modules provide the chance to specialise in topics like Nazi Germany, the British home front during WWII, post-colonial Africa, Victorian cities, antisemitism, the civil rights movement, and global revolutionary movements. The program combines breadth, depth, and practical experience to prepare graduates for diverse career paths.
