COURSE CURRICULUM

The BA (Hons) History and English Literature degree at Liverpool John Moores University combines the study of historical events with literary analysis, offering students an interdisciplinary approach to understanding culture, society, and politics. In the first year, students are introduced to key historical periods and debates alongside core concepts in literary and cultural theory, with modules such as Making History, Exploring History, Liverpool Legacies, and Critical Keywords for English. The second year deepens this foundation through modules like Debates in History and Research Paper, while providing a wide range of optional choices across both disciplines, including Soviet history, Colonial Africa, Romanticism, Postcolonial Writing, the Victorians, Modernism, and Auto/Biographical Writing. Opportunities to study abroad or undertake work experience are also available, adding a global or practical dimension to the degree. In the final year, students complete a dissertation and select from a diverse array of modules that allow them to specialize in areas of interest. Options span from historical topics such as Nazi Germany, Irish history, and terrorism, to literary studies focusing on Shakespeare, Gothic fiction, world literature, feminist writing, and environmental crisis literature.
