COURSE CURRICULUM

The BA (Hons) Film Studies at Liverpool John Moores University offers a comprehensive program that combines theoretical understanding with practical filmmaking skills. In the first year, students develop foundational knowledge in film language, screenwriting, film theory, and production techniques, while exploring British social realism in cinema and gaining hands-on experience in post-production skills. The second year builds on this foundation through core modules in documentary and fiction filmmaking, as well as professional practice in working within the film industry. Students can also choose from a variety of optional modules, including American and European cinema, experimental filmmaking, film adaptation, and video essay production, alongside opportunities for study abroad at both semester and year-long durations, broadening international perspectives on film. In the final year, students engage with world cinema and undertake their final film projects, including pre-production, production, and a written film thesis. Optional modules allow for specialization in areas such as film interpretation, work-based learning, and Black American film. Across the three years, the program emphasizes both academic and practical skills, equipping students with critical understanding, creative expertise, and professional experience. Graduates leave with a versatile portfolio and the knowledge necessary to pursue careers in filmmaking, media production, research, and other creative industries.
