The BA (Hons) English and Media and Cultural Studies at Liverpool John Moores University provides a comprehensive exploration of literature, media, and culture, blending critical analysis with practical skills. In the first year, students develop foundational knowledge through modules on media texts, literary and cultural theory, media institutions and audiences, professional writing, and Liverpool’s cultural legacies, gaining an understanding of how texts engage and influence audiences. The second year broadens this foundation, focusing on public communication, public relations, popular journalism, mediating popular culture, and exploring historical and contemporary literary forms, alongside optional opportunities to study abroad. Students engage with diverse texts and issues including postcolonial writing, gender, race, social class, poetry, and modernist literature, developing analytical, research, and communication skills applicable to multiple professional contexts. In the final year, students specialise in areas of interest through modules such as digital writing, screen media, social and digital media, media and cultural industries, and dissertation research, alongside literary studies spanning Shakespeare, contemporary fiction, Gothic literature, world literature, and explorations of cultural, social, and environmental issues. The program integrates theoretical study with applied practice, work-related learning, and digital engagement, equipping graduates with critical thinking, creative, and professional skills for careers in media, publishing, communications, cultural industries, and related creative fields.
