COURSE CURRICULUM

The BA (Hons) English Literature degree at Liverpool John Moores University offers a broad and flexible program that combines the study of traditional and contemporary literature with cultural and interdisciplinary perspectives. In the first year, students engage with foundational texts and ideas through modules such as American Classics, Literary and Cultural Theory, World, Time and Text, Liverpool Legacies, Environment, Culture and Technology, and Critical Keywords for English, establishing a strong grounding in literary analysis and cultural understanding. The second year expands on this foundation with modules exploring seventeenth-century literature, poetry, and a wide range of optional topics including Postcolonial Writing, Modernism, Romanticism, autobiographical writing, slavery, working-class literature, gender studies, and digital humanities, alongside opportunities for study abroad and professional work experience. In the third year, students focus on advanced literary research through the English Dissertation and may choose from diverse options such as contemporary women’s writing, Shakespeare, British and American fiction, gothic literature, environmental literature, world literature, and the literature of social and political issues, including race, migration, and identity. This structure allows students to tailor their studies to individual interests while developing critical thinking, research, and analytical skills, and provides opportunities for practical experience, independent study, and engagement with global literary and cultural debates, preparing graduates for careers in writing, education, media, research, and the creative industries.
