COURSE CURRICULUM

The BA (Hons) English Literature and Creative Writing at Liverpool John Moores University offers a comprehensive program that combines rigorous literary study with intensive creative practice. In the first year, students build a foundation in observation, character and story, language and craft, literary and cultural theory, and critical and historical contexts, while also exploring Liverpool’s cultural legacies. The second year allows students to deepen their literary knowledge and creative skills through a wide range of optional modules, including script development, poetry, creative non-fiction, screenwriting, and writing for stage and radio, alongside studies in literary periods such as Romanticism, Modernism, the Victorians, and postcolonial literature. Opportunities for study abroad or semester abroad enrich students’ academic and cultural experiences. In the final year, students specialise in advanced workshops in prose, poetry, or scriptwriting, and complete major projects such as the Writer at Work portfolio and dissertation, while also exploring contemporary themes like feminist fictions, travel writing, gothic fiction, world literature, environmental writing, and race in literature. The program balances academic analysis with practical creative development, encouraging independent study and professional engagement. Through this combination, students acquire critical thinking, advanced writing, and research skills, preparing them for careers in writing, publishing, media, and the creative industries, while developing a strong creative and scholarly identity.
