COURSE CURRICULUM

The BA (Hons) Education with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities at Liverpool John Moores University is designed to prepare students to support children and young people with diverse learning needs in educational settings. The program emphasizes understanding the social, cultural, and historical contexts that impact learners with disabilities or additional needs, encouraging students to adopt inclusive and flexible approaches. In the first year, students explore foundational concepts such as contemporary learning theories, inclusive practice, contextualizing SEND, and the broader societal and educational landscape. In the second year, the focus shifts to deeper engagement with disability, identity, and consolidating knowledge of special educational needs and disabilities, alongside collaboration with families to support learner development. Students also develop professional and research skills through enquiry-based projects. Optional modules and opportunities for a semester abroad allow students to tailor their studies to specific interests and gain international perspectives. In the final year, students complete a dissertation and examine topics such as neurodiversity, education, culture, and identity, while optional modules provide practical experience in therapeutic approaches, informal and non-formal education, and supporting vulnerable learners. Throughout the course, theory is consistently linked to practice, equipping graduates with the skills, knowledge, and reflective capacity needed for successful careers in inclusive education and related professional roles.
