COURSE CURRICULUM

The BA (Hons) Education and Primary Studies at Liverpool John Moores University provides students with a comprehensive understanding of education and child development, preparing them for careers focused on supporting young learners. In the first year, students explore foundational topics such as learners and learning in contemporary society, education and society, snapshots of education, and holistic understanding of the child, along with an introduction to primary education. This establishes a strong base in understanding the social, cultural, and developmental contexts of learning. In the second year, the program builds on this foundation with core modules in pedagogy and practice, creativity and discovery learning, professional project enquiry, and professional roles and perspectives, while offering optional modules like schools and the curriculum, contemporary issues for young people, and opportunities for studying abroad. In the final year, students undertake a dissertation alongside core modules in contemporary issues in children’s lives and education, culture, and identity, complemented by optional modules focused on therapeutic approaches, parental engagement, informal and non-formal education, and supporting vulnerable children. The course emphasizes both theory and practice, enabling students to critically engage with contemporary educational challenges, develop research and professional skills, and gain practical experience. Graduates are equipped with the knowledge, critical thinking abilities, and transferable skills necessary to make a meaningful impact in primary education and related fields.
