COURSE CURRICULUM

The BSc (Hons) Early Childhood Studies at Liverpool John Moores University provides a thorough exploration of child development, education, and well-being, focusing on children from birth to eight years old. In the first year, students build foundational knowledge through modules on holistic child development, pedagogical approaches, and perspectives of children and childhood, combined with practical enquiry projects to encourage critical thinking and reflective practice. The second year deepens this understanding by examining child development in broader social and global contexts, exploring issues such as global inequalities, research methods, and professional project enquiry. Optional modules allow students to focus on specific areas, such as health literacies, curricula, or professional approaches, and there is the opportunity to study abroad, providing an international perspective on early childhood education. In the final year, students consolidate their learning through modules on collaborative approaches to supporting children and families, comparative international early childhood education, and a dissertation research project. Optional modules give further scope to specialise in areas such as therapeutic work with children, social work within early childhood, or pedagogy and practice in early childhood and primary education. Across all three years, the program integrates theory, research, and practical experience, equipping graduates with the knowledge, analytical skills, and professional competencies required for careers in education, social care, or further study in early childhood development.
