COURSE CURRICULUM

The BA (Hons) Criminology at Liverpool John Moores University offers a broad and interdisciplinary approach to the study of crime, justice, and social harm. In the first year, students explore foundational concepts including criminological theory, the workings of the criminal justice system, contemporary issues in criminology, media representations of crime, and research methods. This establishes the analytical and practical skills necessary for advanced study. In the second year, students deepen their understanding with modules on key criminological thinkers, contemporary perspectives, qualitative research methods, and a research project, while optional modules allow engagement with global crime, social justice, and applied criminology. International study opportunities further broaden understanding of comparative criminal justice systems. The third year focuses on advanced, specialised topics, including green criminology, police, power and social order, child and youth justice, drugs and society, security and terrorism, and human rights. Students also have the opportunity to undertake dissertations, international fieldwork, and work-based learning, allowing them to apply theoretical knowledge in practical contexts. Across all three years, the program emphasises critical thinking, research skills, and applied learning, preparing graduates for careers in criminal justice, law enforcement, policy-making, research, and related sectors, while fostering the ability to challenge conventional approaches and understand crime in its wider social, political, and global contexts.
