COURSE CURRICULUM

The BA (Hons) Criminology and Sociology at Liverpool John Moores University provides an interdisciplinary approach to understanding crime, society, and social behavior. In the first year, students explore foundational topics including criminological theory, the criminal justice system, contemporary criminology issues, sociology, and social and environmental challenges, while developing practical research skills through modules such as Becoming a Sociological Investigator. Year two builds on this foundation with core modules in research methods, key criminological thinkers, and contemporary criminological perspectives. Students also have the opportunity to study optional topics including health and illness, social media activism, musical identities, global crime, and social justice, along with options for study abroad or work-based learning. In the third year, students focus on advanced sociological and criminological research through a dissertation or international fieldwork, and can choose from a wide range of specialized modules covering topics such as green criminology, policing, child and youth justice, cultural sociology, nationalism, cities, gender and sexuality, and the politics of fear and aversion. Across all three years, students develop critical thinking, analytical, and research skills while gaining insight into the complex relationships between social structures, crime, justice, and societal change. Graduates are prepared for careers in research, criminal justice, social policy, community work, and related fields.
