COURSE CURRICULUM

The BA (Hons) Criminal Justice at Liverpool John Moores University offers a detailed and practical exploration of crime, the criminal justice system, and societal responses to offending. In the first year, students build a foundational understanding through modules covering crime, law, and criminalisation, the history of crime and criminal justice, criminological theory, the structure and function of the criminal justice system, media influences, and personal academic development. Year two focuses on advanced theoretical and applied knowledge, including injustices within the system, knowledge production and transfer in criminal justice, new directions in criminological theory, and professional development. Students can also choose optional modules in rehabilitation, penology, victimology, and have opportunities for study abroad experiences. In the final year, the program emphasizes employability and specialist study, including modules on contemporary issues in prisons and probation, policing, youth justice, substance use, and comparative criminal justice. Students may undertake a dissertation or explore topics such as green criminology, regulation, harm, victimisation, and terrorism. The course combines theoretical understanding with practical and vocational experiences, offering networking, placements, and engagement with criminal justice agencies. Graduates emerge with the analytical, practical, and professional skills needed to pursue careers in policing, probation, youth justice, prisons, research, or other sectors within the criminal justice system, equipped to address current and emerging challenges.
