COURSE CURRICULUM

The BA (Hons) Creative Writing at Liverpool John Moores University provides a structured and progressive curriculum designed to develop both the creative and professional skills of aspiring writers. In the first year, students build a strong foundation through core modules including Observation and Discovery, Writers are Readers, Character and Story, Story Origins, Language and Craft, and Professional Practice: The Writer in the World, which together introduce essential creative techniques and contextual understanding. In the second year, students can begin to specialise, choosing from modules such as Script Development, Short Fiction, Poetry, Creative Non-fiction, Screenwriting, Writing for Stage & Radio, Writing in Production, The Fantastic, Approaching Your Novel, and AI and the Humanities. There are also opportunities to study abroad for a semester or full year, broadening cultural perspectives and creative experience. The third year allows students to undertake advanced and highly specialised study in their chosen discipline with modules like Advanced Script Workshop, Advanced Poetry Workshop, Advanced Prose Workshop, Digital Writing, Writer at Work: Portfolio and Project, Independent Study, Creative Writing Work-Based Learning, and Developments in Contemporary Writing and Publishing. Through this combination of foundational learning, creative specialisation, professional practice, and opportunities for international exposure, students develop a comprehensive skill set that prepares them for a professional writing career across multiple media and literary forms.
