COURSE CURRICULUM

The BA (Hons) Creative Writing and Film Studies at Liverpool John Moores University is a dynamic program that combines practical filmmaking, screenwriting, and creative writing with critical film study. In the first year, students build foundational skills in film language, theory, production, and storytelling alongside modules in observation, character, and language, providing a strong grounding in both practical and analytical aspects of the disciplines. In the second year, students can choose from a wide range of optional modules to explore specific interests, including American and European cinema, documentary and experimental filmmaking, video essays, film adaptation, and various creative writing pathways such as screenwriting, short fiction, poetry, creative non-fiction, and stage and radio writing. Opportunities for study abroad and work placements broaden experience and professional development. In the final year, students undertake advanced projects such as final film production, pre-production, interpretation in film, and specialized workshops in prose, poetry, and scriptwriting. Additional options include world cinema, black American film, digital writing, and creative writing work-based learning, allowing students to tailor their studies to their career ambitions. Across the three years, the program emphasizes portfolio development, independent research, and practical skills, preparing graduates for professional careers in filmmaking, screenwriting, creative writing, or related creative industries.
