ABOUT UNIVERSITY

Liverpool John Moores University (LJMU) is a public research university located in Liverpool, England. Its origins date back to 1823 when it was established as the Liverpool Mechanics’ School of Arts, later merging with other colleges, including the F. L. Calder School of Domestic Science and the C. F. Mott College of Education, before becoming Liverpool Polytechnic in 1970. In 1992, under the Further and Higher Education Act, it was granted university status and renamed Liverpool John Moores University in honor of Sir John Moores, a local businessman and philanthropist who strongly supported expanding access to education. LJMU has a notable history of maritime education, beginning with the Liverpool Nautical College in 1892, and its campuses feature several Georgian and Victorian buildings that reflect its long heritage. Today, the university is one of the largest in the UK, with more than 25,000 students in 2023/24, including over 20,000 undergraduates and nearly 5,000 postgraduates. It offers around 250 degree courses and employs approximately 2,400 staff, welcoming students from over 100 countries. LJMU is a member of MillionPlus, the European University Association, and a founding member of the Northern Consortium. The institution has received recognition for excellence, including the Queen’s Anniversary Prize in 2005. Over the years, LJMU has attracted high-profile figures as chancellors, such as Cherie Blair, Brian May, Sir Brian Leveson, and more recently, Nisha Katona, founder of Mowgli, who became Chancellor in 2022.
