COURSE CURRICULUM

The Building Surveying degree is structured across three years to provide students with a balance of technical knowledge, practical skills and professional understanding. In the first year, students are introduced to key areas through modules such as Construction Technology and Design 1, Building Science and the Sustainable Environment, Introduction to Measurement and Costing, and Construction Economics. These modules build a strong foundation in construction methods, environmental considerations, costing techniques and the economic principles that influence the built environment. The second year develops more specialist expertise with modules in Construction Technology and Design 2, Building Pathology, Construction Law, and Procurement and Contract Administration. At this stage, students learn how to identify and assess building defects, understand legal frameworks in construction, and manage contracts and procurement processes effectively. In the final year, the focus shifts to advanced professional practice and application. Core modules include Collaborative and Interprofessional Practice, which develops teamwork across disciplines, and Conservation, Refurbishment and Retrofitting of Buildings, which explores sustainable approaches to preserving and improving structures. The year concludes with an independent Research Project, allowing students to investigate a topic of interest in depth. Together, these stages prepare graduates with the technical, analytical and professional skills essential for a career in building surveying.
