COURSE CURRICULUM

This Criminology and Policing degree offers students a strong foundation in understanding crime, justice and law enforcement while also developing key research and professional skills. In the first year, students are introduced to core criminological theories, the study of violence in society, and the role of policing in protecting the state, alongside building essential social science skills. The second year deepens this knowledge by focusing on contemporary crime and policing issues, exploring victimology, imprisonment and rehabilitation, and developing practical research skills through a professional placement. These experiences allow students to connect theory with real-world practice. In the final year, students undertake a dissertation to pursue independent research in an area of interest, alongside modules in professional learning and policing priorities. A wide range of optional modules provides opportunities for specialization, covering topics such as organised crime, genocide studies, human rights, crimes of the 21st century, youth justice, gender and crime, intelligence and security, and the impact of criminal deaths on society. By graduation, students will have developed a thorough understanding of criminological and policing practices, as well as critical thinking, research and professional skills, preparing them for diverse careers in policing, criminal justice, intelligence services and related sectors.
