COURSE CURRICULUM

This course spans two academic years and is designed to equip future dietitians with the scientific, clinical, practical, and professional expertise necessary for delivering effective nutritional care across diverse healthcare settings. In Year 1, students are introduced to the foundational principles of dietetics through a series of modules that blend theoretical knowledge with applied learning. The Lifestyle & Long-term Conditions module encourages critical thinking around the holistic management of chronic health issues, incorporating clinical, psychological, and sociological perspectives. Nutrition Advances in Practice and Applied Nutrition Support deepen understanding of the scientific principles behind diet therapy, exploring nutritional requirements and assessment strategies for both acute and chronic conditions. Students develop core research competencies in Research Methods for Nutrition, which supports the subsequent Research & Practice Development module, where they apply learned methodologies to a small-scale, practice-related research project. Professional Development for Practice and Enterprise in Public Health Nutrition support the development of interpersonal, ethical, and enterprise skills, essential for work in multidisciplinary and community-based roles. Practice Placement A introduces students to the real-world responsibilities of dietitians through observational learning and practical tasks during a three-week clinical placement. In the Final Year, students progress to longer and more immersive Practice Placements B and C, lasting 13 and 12 weeks respectively. These placements are designed to align with the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) requirements and provide students with the opportunity to apply and refine their knowledge and skills in real healthcare environments. Reflection & Consolidation of Practice ensures students critically evaluate their experiences and prepare to innovate and lead improvements in nutritional care. The final Research & Practice Development 2 module offers an additional opportunity for independent inquiry into an area of professional interest, allowing students to further demonstrate autonomy and the application of evidence-based practice. Upon successful completion, graduates are prepared to apply for HCPC registration as qualified dietitians.
