COURSE CURRICULUM

This MSc program in Sport and Exercise Physiology offers a comprehensive and critical exploration of the physiological responses to exercise in both health and disease. The Advanced Exercise Physiology module provides an in-depth look at how key body systems—cardiovascular, respiratory, muscular, and metabolic—interact under different physical and environmental stresses. You'll study systemic responses not only at rest and during exertion but also under specific conditions like altitude or heat.The Research Process module introduces key approaches to designing and analysing research, helping you build a strong foundation for your independent work. This is complemented by the Professional Practice module, which prepares you for employment by developing your practical skills and understanding of the professional expectations in sport and exercise science.Your Major Independent Study forms the capstone of the course, allowing you to plan and carry out an extended research project aligned with your interests. You’ll gain valuable experience in project design, data collection, analysis, and reporting, guided by academic supervision.You must also choose at least two of three specialist physiology modules. Clinical Exercise Testing focuses on cardiopulmonary diagnostics and prognosis in clinical populations, with practical and statistical training. Evidence-Based Practice in Sports Physiology examines advanced testing and prescription for elite athletes, placing emphasis on applying new technology and research. Mechanisms of Adaptation in Exercise Training explores how training and inactivity influence health, particularly cardiometabolic disorders, deepening your understanding of physical activity’s role in health promotion and disease prevention.Together, these modules provide a blend of theoretical knowledge, practical skills, and research experience to prepare you for careers in applied physiology, clinical settings, or further academic research.
