COURSE CURRICULUM

This course explores the creative and technical dimensions of sound and music in interactive contexts, providing students with a diverse and practical education in music technology. In Sound & Music for Interactivity, students learn how to design and produce audio for interactive media, focusing particularly on the unique demands of games and user-responsive environments. Using industry-standard tools, they will develop content that demonstrates a clear understanding of the emotional and narrative role that sound and music play in such settings. Interfaces & Interactivity builds on this by encouraging the design and implementation of interactive systems for sound manipulation, prompting students to develop creative solutions to system design challenges. Research Practice equips students with the necessary research tools and methods to support their creative and technical work. This includes both theoretical inquiry and practical investigation relevant to music technology. In Negotiated Skills Development, students work independently on a self-directed project agreed upon with a tutor, allowing them to focus on a particular interest or skill area within the field. Creative Sound Design offers an in-depth look at sound production techniques, enabling students to build audio systems suited to a specific brief and develop an understanding of core sound design technologies and approaches. Students then choose between two specialized modules: Sound, Music & Image, which focuses on the creation of audio-visual media and explores the relationship between sound and image; or Spatial Audio Arts, Media & Technologies, which looks at historical and contemporary practices in spatial sound, including its use in cinema and virtual reality. The course culminates in the Final Individual Project, where students synthesize their learning into a major piece of work that aligns with their interests and professional goals in sound and music production.
