COURSE CURRICULUM

This MSc course in Biomedical Science offers a comprehensive education that combines scientific theory, practical laboratory experience, and professional development. It begins with science communication, where students explore how scientific research is shared through traditional channels such as academic journals and conferences, as well as through mass media and social media. Emphasis is placed on tailoring messages for different audiences using various dissemination techniques. In public health epidemiology, students examine how diseases are distributed and what causes them, studying both infectious agents and genetic factors. They also assess public health surveillance programs and apply statistical skills to analyze global health data. Diagnostic microbiology is approached through case studies, teaching students to identify microbial pathogens using advanced molecular diagnostics while also understanding the global challenges posed by drug resistance and disease evolution. Advanced research methods provide hands-on experience with modern experimental techniques and the principles of safe laboratory practice, including COSHH and ethical research conduct. The course also includes a module in advanced infectious diseases, covering a wide range of illnesses such as cholera, malaria, HIV, COVID-19, and Ebola. Each disease is studied in terms of its pathology, epidemiology, treatment, and impact on global populations. A dedicated professional development module helps students build skills in leadership, project management, and reflective practice while developing a personal career plan. The research component of the course includes two major stages. In the preparation phase, students design a safe and ethical research project and plan for effective data collection. In the final stage, students carry out their independent research project, applying their scientific judgment, lab skills, and data analysis capabilities. They then present their findings in a written thesis and an oral defense. Overall, this program prepares students for careers in biomedical research, diagnostics, public health, or science communication.
