COURSE CURRICULUM

The Child and Adolescent Mental Health program offers a deep dive into various aspects of mental health care provision for children and adolescents. The module Understanding & Exploring Child & Adolescent Mental Health provides insight into the frameworks and environments surrounding mental health care for this demographic, introducing models of practice, critical theory, and social policy. Students will explore key areas such as infant and child development, child safeguarding, and mental health promotion strategies, preparing them to critically reflect on the socio-political context of child and adolescent mental health. In the Critically Exploring Neurodevelopmental Disorders & Child Mental Health module, students develop a critical awareness of neurodevelopmental disorders, including ADHD, autism, sleep disorders, and other conditions. This module focuses on their aetiology, prevalence, and assessment, as well as their management and implications for transitioning to adult life. Understanding Social Research & Evaluation offers students a solid grounding in research methodologies, ethics, and data analysis. Students will learn how to select, devise, analyze, and synthesize research, culminating in the ability to create a research proposal. The Dissertation module allows students to plan, carry out, and report on an original, independent research project, applying theory to practice with guidance from a supervisor. The Therapeutic Skills & Social Models of Intervention module explores various communication skills and therapeutic models, providing a critical insight into social and psychological interventions. This module emphasizes community-based, psycho-social approaches to working with children, young people, and families. Lastly, The Global Practitioner module introduces macro-theory related to globalization and its impact on child and adolescent mental health, examining global factors such as social, political, and economic conditions. Through this program, students gain a comprehensive understanding of child and adolescent mental health, preparing them for practice in a global context.
