COURSE CURRICULUM

This master's program in smart systems and intelligent technologies is designed to equip students with both theoretical knowledge and practical expertise in emerging digital and connected environments. The Smart Systems module introduces the foundational principles of the Internet of Things (IoT), focusing on how automation and connectivity are applied to real-world scenarios such as wearable technology and home automation. It combines theoretical insight with hands-on prototyping, enabling students to design, build and deploy smart systems using relevant tools and techniques. The Intelligent Systems & Robotics module complements this by delving deeper into the development of autonomous systems and behaviour modelling using industry-standard platforms like ROS, MATLAB, and Simulink. Students will engage with robotic and AI systems, learning how to simulate and code for real-world scenarios that require intelligent decision-making. Project Management plays a critical role in preparing students for professional delivery of technical projects, covering methodologies, standards and legislation, while challenging students to apply learning within their own contexts. Research Practice enhances the academic foundation of the program, guiding students through research methodologies and helping them reflect critically on their academic and professional development. This forms the basis for the Master’s Dissertation, which serves as a capstone project requiring independent study on a topic of personal or professional relevance. In this final stage, students must demonstrate originality, methodological rigour, and ethical awareness while producing a coherent and academically robust piece of work. The dissertation also includes a viva, ensuring students can confidently articulate and defend their research outcomes. Altogether, the program bridges the gap between theoretical knowledge and applied skillsets, preparing graduates to contribute meaningfully in sectors where smart and intelligent systems are driving innovation and efficiency.
