COURSE CURRICULUM
This urban planning program offers a comprehensive understanding of the principles, challenges, and strategies involved in shaping sustainable, inclusive, and well-planned communities. It begins with Housing Needs, which introduces the demand for housing and the ways spatial planning addresses these requirements. Students then delve into Histories of Planning & Making Places, reviewing the evolution of the spatial planning system in the UK and globally. This historical context is key to understanding contemporary policies and practices. The Development Value & Viability module explores the financial and practical aspects of planning, equipping students with the skills to assess whether development projects are financially viable and strategically valuable. The Research Methods module prepares students to undertake independent, rigorous research for their dissertation by equipping them with the skills necessary for critical inquiry and analysis. Legislative Frameworks & Decision Making in Planning teaches students how planning decisions are informed by laws and frameworks, helping them understand the role of multi-disciplinary approaches in effective decision-making. The Planning for Environmental Sustainability module focuses on incorporating sustainability into urban development, with a special emphasis on combating climate change and protecting biodiversity. Students will explore practical strategies for planning and regulation that contribute to more sustainable communities. The Inclusive Places: Theory & Practice module focuses on making planning more inclusive, encouraging students to engage with both historical and contemporary challenges in creating spaces accessible and equitable for all. Finally, the Dissertation provides students the opportunity to apply their learning to a research project of their own design, allowing for a deeper exploration of a particular topic of interest in urban planning. This module culminates in a critical evaluation of evidence, contributing new insights to the field. These modules offer a blend of theory and practice, preparing students for leadership roles in spatial planning, urban design, and development management. Students will gain the tools to critically evaluate urban planning challenges, propose innovative solutions, and work within complex legislative and environmental frameworks.
