COURSE CURRICULUM
This youth and community work program provides an in-depth and critical foundation for working effectively with young people and communities in an increasingly complex global and local context. The module on Critical Perspectives in Youth & Community Work examines the fast-evolving social and political environment in post-Brexit Britain, including the rise of populist politics and the shifting priorities of policymakers and funders. Students are encouraged to think critically about their role as practitioners responding to community needs while navigating structural constraints. The Global Perspectives in Practice module expands this understanding by examining how global issues such as poverty, migration, climate change and health inequalities impact young people locally. Through comparative examples, students develop a broadened worldview and gain insight into how globalisation influences local practice. The dual-placement structure, each requiring 200 hours, offers substantial hands-on experience. In Placement 1, students begin to develop and deliver targeted interventions based on their engagement with young people. In Placement 2, they take on leadership responsibilities, engaging with external agencies and beginning to understand the dynamics of multi-agency work and inter-professional collaboration. These practical experiences are supported by the Promoting Inclusive Practice module, where students explore the relationship between personal values, professional ethics, and inclusive practice within youth work frameworks. This module encourages reflection on professional identity and practice in a sector undergoing rapid transformation.Leadership & Management: Self, Team & Organisation supports students to develop key operational skills such as funding applications, team leadership, and strategic development within youth organisations. Understanding Social Research & Evaluation builds the necessary research capabilities to design and conduct evidence-based interventions, preparing students for their final Dissertation. This independent project allows students to engage deeply with a topic of personal and professional relevance, demonstrating their capacity for critical analysis, ethical research, and practical application. Altogether, this program balances critical theory, applied learning, and professional development for a meaningful career in youth and community work.
