COURSE CURRICULUM

This screenwriting program offers a comprehensive and progressive journey through the craft and profession of writing for screen, beginning with a deep dive into the fundamentals of storytelling and concluding with the completion of a major final project. The course begins with the Storytelling module, where students explore why stories matter and how they are constructed visually and narratively. This foundation introduces key concepts such as narrative theory, script development, and the evolution of storytelling across different media platforms. Building on this, the Creative Screenwriting module develops practical skills, focusing on script reading, editing, structure, character creation, and thematic development. Here, students begin to shape their own voice while learning the technical demands of the industry. In the Genre module, students investigate how narrative forms and genres function in screen media, with an emphasis on how traditional and contemporary styles can be studied, challenged, and innovatively combined. This leads into the Feature Film module, where the focus shifts to long-form storytelling. Students work on developing a personal portfolio with professional relevance, analyzing script elements like dialogue, setting, tone, and structure. The Writers Room module introduces collaborative writing, allowing students to simulate real industry practices by developing shared projects with peers, focusing on outlines, episodic structures, and collaborative decision-making. Writing for an Industry Context prepares students to engage with the professional world, emphasizing self-promotion, networking, and pitching through the organisation of an event or conference. Finally, in the Final Project, students synthesize all they have learned by developing a substantial script for any screen platform. This project requires full creative investment, whether refining a previous concept or starting anew, ensuring the work is of a standard that reflects both personal voice and professional awareness. The course provides both creative depth and industry insight, preparing students for real-world screenwriting challenges.
