This documentary filmmaking course offers a holistic and practice-led journey designed to cultivate both creative voice and professional capability. The course begins with Creative Concepts, where students explore their identity as documentary filmmakers through observation, visualisation, and self-expression. Here, documentary is framed not just as a factual medium but as a space to challenge ideas of truth, realism, and empathy. This philosophical foundation is complemented by the hands-on training in Documentary Production, where students learn the technical aspects of camera operation, sound acquisition, and editing workflow. Practical skills are taught alongside the development of ethical awareness and narrative thinking, preparing students for real-world production environments. In Documentary Development, students delve into idea generation, genre research, and advanced professional practices including pitching, treatments, and archive usage. This stage reinforces creative confidence and helps students position themselves within the industry through personal and professional reflection. Creative Practice then pushes students to take their ideas further, encouraging experimentation with sound, camera movement, and storytelling while producing a series of short films. The emphasis here is on finding one’s voice and working collaboratively, with imagination grounded in production realities. All of this leads into the Master's Project, the culmination of the program, where students independently or collaboratively develop and complete a full documentary. The project requires evidence of professional planning, ethical compliance, and technical organisation, ending with a portfolio suitable for distribution. Finally, the Next Project Development module prepares students for post-graduation life by focusing on sustainability and long-term career planning. Whether preparing a pitch, a business plan, or a professional website, students emerge with a comprehensive portfolio demonstrating both creative flair and industry readiness. The course combines critical inquiry, technical skill, and entrepreneurial thinking to ensure students can thrive in the dynamic landscape of contemporary documentary media.
