COURSE CURRICULUM
This course offers a comprehensive exploration of cinematography as both a technical craft and a creative storytelling discipline, equipping students with the advanced knowledge and practical experience necessary to thrive in the screen industries. The Visual Storytelling module introduces students to the cinematographer's role in shaping the look and feel of a moving image, covering both the creative and technical aspects of visual narrative development. Through a critical examination of cinematographic choices and their impact on storytelling, students engage with key principles of camera work, lighting, and visual composition. Cinematography further deepens this understanding by encouraging students to manipulate light and camera techniques with precision, focusing on how visual elements influence mood, tone, and characterisation. Practical workshops simulate industry environments to promote creativity and collaboration, essential attributes for any aspiring director of photography.Industry Focus 1 and Industry Focus 2 run alongside the creative modules to bridge academic learning with professional practice. The first industry-focused module introduces students to the structure and collaborative practices within the screen industries, including how cinematographers work with various departments. The second module shifts the emphasis toward preparing students for industry entry, guiding them through the development of a personal career strategy and facilitating connections that support future employment in cinematography or related roles. Cinematography & Screen Arts provides a theoretical and contextual foundation, examining the evolution of screen arts from analogue to digital forms, and inviting critical engagement with historical and contemporary works. This exploration allows students to reflect on their own creative approaches in light of established and emerging visual languages. The course culminates in a Major Project, where students consolidate their learning through a substantial, self-directed piece of work. With support from experienced tutors, they are expected to demonstrate autonomy, critical reflection, and technical expertise, producing a final artefact that embodies their artistic vision and professional capabilities as cinematographers.
