COURSE CURRICULUM
This Law course offers a well-rounded foundation in legal education, with a strong emphasis on employability and the development of analytical, research, and communication skills. In the first year, students are introduced to the English Legal System, where they begin to understand how law functions within society, focusing on the legal institutions, court structures, and sources of law. This module also helps students develop their legal research skills and interpret both primary and secondary sources. Contract Law explores how legally binding agreements are formed, outlining the rights and responsibilities of parties involved and examining remedies for breach of contract. In Criminal Law, students engage with fundamental legal principles such as actus reus and mens rea and apply their understanding to real-world scenarios involving offences and defences. Public Law delves into the constitutional framework of the UK, exploring how power is distributed across governmental bodies and the protection of individual rights through the rule of law and judicial review. The Legal and Employability Skills module prepares students for professional life, helping them to identify and develop core competencies through mock recruitment tasks and self-assessment activities. In the second year, the focus shifts toward specialised topics like Victimology and Policing, examining the role of victims in the criminal justice process and how policing practices are shaped by societal attitudes, policy, and law. In the final year, students further explore critical areas of law and justice through modules such as Crimes of Violence, Sexual Offending and Victimisation, which assess the legal and social dimensions of these offences. Criminal Justice Policy encourages critical thinking about the relationship between academic research and real-world policy-making, considering both national and international influences. Overall, the course balances theoretical knowledge with practical application, preparing students for a wide range of legal and criminal justice careers.
