COURSE CURRICULUM

This Sports and Exercise Therapy degree provides a comprehensive progression from foundational anatomical and physiological knowledge to advanced therapeutic, rehabilitative, and clinical practices. The course is structured to equip students with the skills and competencies necessary to assess, manage, and rehabilitate musculoskeletal injuries in athletes and active individuals, while also preparing them for professional practice.In year 1, students are introduced to the essential principles and foundational knowledge that underpin sports and exercise therapy. Modules such as Anatomy & Function, Assessment & Pathology, and Physiology of Testing & Training help students understand the human body's structure and function in relation to movement and injury. Students also begin to develop hands-on clinical skills in Massage and Therapeutic Interventions, while building professional and academic competencies that support their growth as practitioners.Year 2 builds on this foundation, moving towards more advanced clinical knowledge and applied skills. Students explore manual and electro therapies in greater depth, understand the complexities of clinical decision making, and gain vital knowledge in trauma management. Modules like Applied Biomechanics and Rehabilitation & Exercise Prescription provide an evidence-based understanding of movement mechanics and the science behind effective recovery programs. Additionally, students begin developing research literacy through the Investigation & Inquiry module, which prepares them for their final-year research project. The inclusion of Exercise for Referred Populations introduces important considerations for working with clients with controlled medical conditions, widening their scope of practice.In the final year, students focus on applying their knowledge in real-world contexts and developing their independence as professionals. The Professional Practice & Placement module offers valuable experience in sport, exercise, and rehabilitation settings under supervision. This practical exposure is complemented by modules that take a broader view of injury management, including psychological, nutritional, and holistic considerations. The Dissertation allows students to explore a research topic in depth, demonstrating their ability to critically evaluate and apply evidence in a sports therapy context.Overall, the degree prepares graduates to enter the field as competent, reflective, and adaptable practitioners, capable of working with diverse clients across injury prevention, assessment, treatment, and rehabilitation.
