COURSE CURRICULUM

In Year 1 of the Speech and Language Therapy (SLT) degree, you’ll begin to build essential academic, clinical, and professional skills. The foundation is laid through modules like Academic, Professional & Clinical Skills, where you’ll explore core areas such as interpersonal skills and begin to understand the HCPC Standards of Proficiency. Modules like Phonetics & Phonology and Linguistics introduce you to the science of speech sounds, phonetic transcription, grammar, dialect, and pragmatics. You’ll also explore developmental psychology in Lifespan Development and the biological basis of speech and language through Medical Sciences for SLT. The module on Speech, Language & Communication Needs (SLCN) provides early insights into speech and language disorders, while Introduction to EBP (Evidence-Based Practice) offers key research and analytical skills. Integrated SLT Studies 1 teaches you how to assess, plan, and evaluate therapy, and your first SLT Clinical Placement gives you real-world experience observing and interacting with service users.In Year 2, your learning deepens with Integrated SLT Studies 2, which builds on your ability to work through the full therapy process. You’ll take Eating, Drinking & Swallowing, focusing on dysphagia, and Cognition for Communication, which covers memory, attention, and executive function in relation to language. Applied Linguistics & Phonetics trains you further in analysing speech and linguistic variation in clinical practice. The EBP for SLT module develops your ability to critically appraise therapy research. Applied Medical Sciences for SLT gives insight into relevant medical conditions, and another SLT Clinical Placement enhances your hands-on learning. Modules like Supporting Speech strengthen your practical intervention strategies.In the Final Year, Integrated SLT Studies 3 challenges you to handle complex client cases, refine your clinical reasoning, and master hypothesis testing. You’ll prepare for professional practice through Transition to Practice and undertake an independent project or dissertation in Evidence for Practice. Your final SLT Clinical Placement will demand greater autonomy and responsibility, with increasing emphasis on reflection and independent planning. Modules like Supporting Communication and Supporting Language focus on nuanced clinical strategies, while Current Issues in SLT keeps you at the forefront of evolving practices in both paediatric and adult care. Altogether, this comprehensive training prepares you to become a confident, reflective, and effective speech and language therapist.
