COURSE CURRICULUM
In the first year of study in the built environment discipline, students are introduced to fundamental concepts that lay the groundwork for professional understanding and practice. The Law in the Built Environment module provides a foundational grasp of tort and contract law, particularly how legal concepts apply to construction and professional settings. City, Society & Property explores the development of urban spaces and how global, national, and local policies shape cities and neighbourhoods, providing students with an appreciation for socio-economic and environmental impacts on urban planning. Introduction to Construction Technology equips students with the knowledge of construction methods and the ability to read technical drawings, particularly in the context of small-scale domestic buildings. In Valuation 1, students learn the basics of valuation, including land measurement, valuation mathematics, and value assessment, while Built Environment Economics focuses on how design decisions influence construction costs. Real Estate Profession & Practice introduces the property development and real estate industry, fostering key academic and professional skills. In the second year, students delve deeper into construction and property-specific knowledge. The Construction Technology module expands to cover high-rise and complex structures, analysing their structural components and compliance with regulations. Valuation 2 develops students’ proficiency in valuation techniques, while Property Management & Agency explores operational and legal aspects of managing residential and commercial properties. Urban Planning: Policy & Practice offers insights into planning systems in the UK and the mechanisms of development approval. Property & Commercial Lease Law & Practice further enhances legal understanding by focusing on land law, leases, and property rights. In the final year, Valuation 3 covers statutory valuation, rating, taxation, and software tools used in professional valuation. Asset & Portfolio Management examines global investment strategies and asset performance. Professional Practice consolidates essential professional competencies such as ethics, client care, and cost reporting. The course concludes with a Dissertation, where students independently investigate a built environment issue through structured research, demonstrating their academic and analytical abilities.
