COURSE CURRICULUM
In the first year of the psychology course, you will develop foundational skills in critical thinking, academic writing, and research through modules such as Introducing Psychology and Research Methods in Psychology 1A and 1B. These modules build your understanding of the scientific method, statistical analysis, and how to communicate findings through research reports. You will also explore the mind and human behavior through Mind, Brain and Behaviour, which introduces you to biological structures like the central and peripheral nervous systems and cognitive functions such as memory, learning, and attention. Introduction to Social and Developmental Psychology exposes you to major theories in social interaction and human development across the lifespan, while Psychology and Mental Health introduces you to mental health assessment, treatment approaches, and the role of cultural and historical contexts. In the second year, you will deepen your understanding of cognitive processes in Cognitive Psychology, exploring problem solving, executive function, and the effects of emotions on thinking. Behavioural Neuroscience covers the biology of vision, motor control, and theories of mental illness, reinforced through lab-based learning. You will advance your research skills in Research Methods in Psychology 2 and 3, applying both quantitative techniques like ANOVA and qualitative methods including discourse analysis and phenomenological approaches. Additional modules include Individual Differences and Work Behaviour, focusing on personality and intelligence in applied settings, Psychological Development Through the Lifespan, and Social Psychology, which explores identity, group behavior, and social interaction. In the final year, you will study Critical Psychology, examining debates around the scientific nature of psychology, and how it addresses issues like race, gender, and social inequality. Your studies will culminate in the Final Year Project, an independent research assignment where you plan, conduct, and present a piece of original research, showcasing your ability to apply psychological knowledge and research methods independently.
