COURSE CURRICULUM
The Occupational Therapy course provides a structured and in-depth progression through the key competencies, theoretical foundations and practical applications required to become a qualified occupational therapist. In Year 1, students begin by exploring the fundamental role of occupation in human life and health through the module Occupations Across the Lifespan. This is paired with Professional Skills for Practice, which introduces therapeutic techniques and self-awareness essential for working in healthcare. Achieving Occupational Potential deepens understanding of occupation-centred approaches, while Evidence for Occupational Therapy builds skills in sourcing and appraising clinical and policy-based evidence. Two practice placements—one observational and one more hands-on—allow students to experience real-world settings and begin applying the occupational therapy process with supervision, focusing on safe and ethical practice. Year 2 builds on this foundation with modules such as Occupational Therapy as a Complex Intervention, which explores the nuances of clinical reasoning and client diversity using case-based learning. Occupational Therapists as Leaders begins the development of professional leadership identity, encouraging self-awareness and responsibility for future service development. Promoting Occupational Justice expands the scope to consider how political, economic and cultural systems impact engagement in meaningful occupation. Research Methods and Design further supports students in developing their ability to conduct evidence-based practice and prepare for final year research. A five-week practice placement enables students to deliver assessments and interventions, promoting independent clinical reasoning and integration of theory into practice. In the final year, students carry out an ethical research project for Applied Research, culminating in a dissertation and research poster. Potential for Occupational Therapy encourages forward-thinking by exploring how therapists can contribute to emerging healthcare markets, including with entrepreneurial and marketing skills. Two final placements—a six-week placement in a non-traditional setting and a ten-week placement with complex caseloads—allow students to consolidate their skills, demonstrate professional readiness and engage in collaborative, evidence-based, client-centred practice.
