COURSE CURRICULUM

In the first year of this Geography and Planning program, students explore the foundations of urban and environmental geography. Sustainable Urbanism & European Field Trip introduces sustainability principles in cities, highlighted by a visit to a European city to observe real-world applications. Geography in the Contemporary World uses current global events to demonstrate the relevance of geography today. Academic Skills for Geographers & Planners develops essential study and professional skills, preparing students for academic success and future careers. Introduction to Physical Geography explains Earth's origins and environmental systems, including the atmosphere and landscape evolution. Environmental Science examines air, noise and water pollution control. City & Society explores the impact of urban policy at different scales. Techniques in Geographical Research is a project-based module applying content from earlier modules through hands-on fieldwork.In the second year, students undertake a ten-week Work Placement & Employability Skills module, gaining practical experience and reflecting on career development. Ecology & Ecosystems explores species distribution, ecological processes, and global challenges like biodiversity loss. Research Methods builds core skills in social science research. The International Field Trip applies theory to global urban issues and responses, while Remote Sensing & GIS introduces digital mapping, satellite data, and environmental applications. Natural Hazard Management & Climate Adaptation covers hazard vulnerability, climate risks, and adaptation strategies using theoretical frameworks and field evidence.In the final year, students complete a Dissertation, conducting an independent research project that applies methods and theories from the degree to a topic of their choice in human geography or planning.
