COURSE CURRICULUM

In Year 1, you will develop foundational skills necessary for both academic and professional success. The Resilience module will help you develop resilience at university and in the workplace, drawing from positive psychology, neuroscience, and cognitive psychology. You will learn techniques such as confidence building, problem-solving, and self-compassion to better adapt to challenges. The Psychological Foundations for Practice module will introduce you to key psychological theories and frameworks that inform counselling and mental health practice. You will also develop essential academic skills in the Professional & Academic Skills module, which will help you navigate university life, improve your study and reflection techniques, and enhance your communication skills. The Engaging & Communicating module will teach you the importance of verbal and non-verbal communication, relating these skills to therapeutic techniques. In the Introduction to Mental Health module, you will explore current mental health concepts, health and illness definitions, and how services are delivered. Additionally, the Human Growth & Development Across the Lifespan module will provide you with knowledge on physical, psychological, and psychosocial development through the human life course, considering political, cultural, and economic factors. Moving into Year 2, you will focus on developing more specialized skills. The Development of Counselling Skills module will build on the foundational skills learned previously, enhancing your understanding of the counselling process and ethical issues. In Mental Health & Practice, you will gain further knowledge of person-centered practice, recovery, and co-production. The Research Methods module will provide you with practical experience in critiquing research, helping you develop the skills for professional work in mental health. Additionally, you will delve into coaching, therapeutic practice, and transcultural perspectives, exploring diverse approaches to working with clients from different cultural backgrounds. These modules will prepare you for the final year where you will refine your practical skills and understanding of advanced therapeutic approaches.
