COURSE CURRICULUM

In the first year of the civil engineering degree, students are introduced to the core principles of the discipline. Modules such as Civil Engineering Management A and Civil Engineering Mathematics provide foundational knowledge in professional roles, legal responsibilities, health and safety, and mathematical techniques critical to solving engineering problems. Practical understanding is developed through Surveying A & Computer Aided Design, where students learn data collection, CAD skills and setting-out methods, and through the Civil Engineering Project, which emphasizes teamwork and real-world application. Engineering Mechanics introduces structural behaviour and analysis, while Engineering Materials Science explores the properties and use of various construction materials.By the second year, students begin to engage with more complex engineering challenges. Civil Engineering Management B deepens knowledge of contracts, risk assessment and project control. Geotechnical Engineering A focuses on soil mechanics, foundation design and the geological context of construction. Structural Design builds on previous mechanics and materials modules to cover reinforced concrete, timber, steel and masonry design using current codes of practice. Engineering Materials Technology expands the study of materials with a particular focus on concrete deterioration and material selection. Highway Engineering A introduces students to highway design, pavement materials and traffic engineering principles.In the final year, students apply their accumulated knowledge to advanced technical and management problems. The Civil Engineering Major Project allows for independent investigation of a simulated industrial scenario, showcasing engineering judgement and planning ability. Quantitative Methods for Decision Making enhances the analytical tools used in engineering project evaluation, using statistics, operational research and financial analysis. Hydraulics & Water Engineering introduces fluid mechanics in pipe and open channel systems, with applications to water infrastructure and environmental engineering. This final phase prepares students to transition into professional practice or further study with a well-rounded technical and managerial skill set.
