COURSE CURRICULUM
This Biomedical Science degree offers a structured and progressive education in human biology, disease processes, clinical diagnostics, and applied biomedical research. The course is designed to build a solid foundation in the life sciences during the early stages and gradually shift toward specialist knowledge and independent research by the final year. It also offers optional pathways for students who wish to focus on areas such as medical biochemistry, microbiology, pharmacology, or molecular biotechnology.In year 1, students are introduced to core subjects that underpin all areas of biomedical science. Modules such as Practical and Study Skills, Cell Biology, Physiology and Pharmacology, Genetics, Biochemistry, and Microbiology provide a broad overview of how the human body works, how diseases develop, and the basic lab skills required to investigate them. This year is about establishing a strong understanding of biological systems and scientific methods.In year 2, the program becomes more applied and professionally oriented. Core modules like Haematology and Transfusion Science, Clinical Microbiology, Clinical Genetics and Immunology, and Biology of Common Diseases bridge the gap between theory and clinical practice. Students also take Research Methods to prepare for independent research in the final year. At this stage, students can begin to specialise through optional pathway modules aligned with their career goals. These modules explore specific areas such as DNA technology, metabolic biochemistry, infectious diseases, and pharmacological treatment, depending on the selected pathway.The final year focuses on real-world application, professional readiness, and independent research. All students complete a Biomedical Research Project, which demonstrates their ability to design, carry out, and evaluate a scientific investigation. Core modules such as Clinical Biochemistry, Pathobiology, and Cellular Pathology explore advanced diagnostic processes, disease mechanisms, and treatment strategies. Students also gain insight into innovation and entrepreneurship through the Enterprise in Biomedical Science module. Further specialisation continues through pathway modules such as Biology of Cancer, Applied Biochemistry, Medical Biotechnology, and Advances in Pharmacology.This course prepares graduates for careers in biomedical laboratories, diagnostics, pharmaceutical and biotech industries, public health, or further study in medicine, research, or postgraduate biomedical science programs. It is structured to meet both academic and professional standards, equipping students with scientific knowledge, technical skills, and critical thinking abilities.
