COURSE CURRICULUM
The Built Environment program provides a structured and in-depth understanding of construction, design, and project management. In the first year, students are introduced to essential topics like law in the built environment, where they learn about torts, contract law, and legal concepts related to construction practices. The introduction to construction technology and technical design projects allows students to explore the methods, techniques, and technical detailing involved in building small-scale domestic buildings. They also study building science and services, focusing on building physics and low-carbon design principles. Additionally, the materials science and structures module covers the properties of various construction materials, including metals, cement, and concrete, essential for design and construction. In the second year, students gain practical experience in interdisciplinary practice, working in teams to understand professional roles and collaboration within the construction process. The building pathology module addresses the causes and remedies of building defects, an essential skill in building surveying. Technical design projects expand into non-domestic construction, where students focus on detailed design for large-scale buildings. Contract practice allows students to understand the different forms of construction contracts and how they impact cost, quality, and time. Additionally, the construction technology module delves into large, commercial, and high-rise buildings, focusing on the behavior of structural elements and compliance with statutory requirements. In the final year, students explore the principles of refurbishment and conservation, especially for historic buildings, addressing the challenges of retrofitting to meet modern standards. The BIM process and philosophy module provides students with knowledge of Building Information Modeling (BIM) tools like Navisworks for managing design and construction. The technical design project focuses on complex buildings, where students apply their knowledge to produce sustainable and buildable designs. Building performance studies enable students to optimize thermal and energy efficiency in building designs. Finally, the inter-professional consultancy module challenges students to work on real-life projects, providing low-carbon solutions while addressing design and construction problems.
