COURSE CURRICULUM

This Sport and Exercise degree program provides a comprehensive and applied education designed to prepare students for a variety of careers in coaching, sport management, community development, and performance analysis. It combines theoretical knowledge with practical application across areas such as sports performance, coaching methods, management, and employability.In Year 1, students are introduced to core scientific concepts such as biomechanics, anatomy, and physiology through modules like Sports Performance 1. Alongside this, they begin to explore coaching principles and inclusive community sport practices in Sports Coaching and Pedagogy 1 and Sport and Physical Activity in the Community 1. Sport Management 1 introduces students to the structure and functions of sport delivery across public, private, and voluntary sectors. Employability 1 and Personal, Professional and Academic Development provide early guidance on career options and help students develop fundamental academic and self-reflective skills.Year 2 builds on this foundation by enhancing students’ ability to design and deliver training interventions in Sports Performance 2. In Sports Coaching and Pedagogy 2, students plan and evaluate coaching programs for a variety of athletes, while Sport and Physical Activity in the Community 2 supports the development of inclusive, age-appropriate coaching strategies. Sport Management 2 introduces strategic analysis techniques, equipping students with tools to better understand and respond to business environments. Research Methods prepares students for independent research by developing their ability to analyse and interpret data. Employability 2 continues to build on career planning through professional development and industry engagement.In the final year, students apply their learning in more complex, real-world contexts. The Final Year Project allows them to investigate a topic of interest through independent research. Sports Performance 3 focuses on analysing athletic performance and identifying improvements through scientific tools. Sport and Physical Activity in the Community 3 introduces the concept of using sport as a development tool in both UK and international contexts. Sports Coaching and Pedagogy 3 encourages students to design long-term development plans for athletes, drawing on advanced coaching theory. Sport Management 3 provides students with hands-on experience managing and delivering sport events, applying project management principles.Overall, this degree offers a progressive and balanced curriculum that supports both academic growth and professional readiness.
