COURSE CURRICULUM

This degree is designed to equip students with the knowledge, practical skills, and professional readiness to work across a variety of roles in sport, coaching, physical activity, and management. It develops a solid foundation in sports science and coaching, while also integrating community engagement, employability skills, and strategic management in the sport industry.In year 1, students begin by studying the core principles of human movement and performance through modules such as Sports Performance 1 and Sports Coaching & Pedagogy 1. These cover biomechanics, anatomy, and the theories behind effective coaching practice. Modules like Sport & Physical Activity in the Community 1 and Sport Management 1 introduce students to the broader context of sport in society, including how it is managed and delivered in public, private, and voluntary sectors. Students also focus on developing essential academic and professional skills through Personal, Professional & Academic Development and Employability 1, which help them explore career paths and gain experience in real-world sport environments.Year 2 builds on this foundation with a stronger emphasis on application and strategic understanding. Sports Performance 2 and Sports Coaching & Pedagogy 2 deepen students’ understanding of training design and coaching across sport types and developmental stages. Sport Management 2 introduces strategic management concepts, while Sport & Physical Activity in the Community 2 and Employability 2 enhance practical coaching skills and industry awareness. The Research Methods module prepares students for their final year project by developing their ability to design, conduct, and report on sport-related research.In the final year, students apply their cumulative knowledge in more advanced and independent contexts. Sports Performance 3 focuses on applying scientific analysis to real athlete performance to identify improvement strategies. Sports Coaching & Pedagogy 3 challenges students to create long-term coaching plans based on a full understanding of athlete needs. The module Sport & Physical Activity in the Community 3 looks at sport for development both in the UK and internationally, focusing on how sport can be used to address social issues. Sport Management 3 allows students to gain hands-on experience in planning and managing a real sport event, using project management tools and strategies. The degree culminates in the Final Year Project, where students undertake an independent research study in one of three specialist pathways: sport coaching, sport management, or sport, exercise and health science.
