COURSE CURRICULUM
In Year 1 of the criminology and sociology course, you’ll be introduced to key ideas and approaches through modules such as Introduction to Criminal Justice and Becoming a Criminologist, which lay the foundations for understanding crime, justice, and criminological thinking. Sociology, Capitalism and Modernity and Global Capitalism explore the historical and social development of capitalism and its impact on modern societies. Researching Society builds your understanding of how knowledge is produced, focusing on the relationship between theory and research methods, and introducing both qualitative and quantitative techniques. In Year 2, your studies expand to examine social inequality and the development of sociological theory. Criminological Intersections explores how aspects of identity such as class, gender, and ethnicity intersect with crime, victimisation, and justice. Inequality of Class and Culture focuses on how power and privilege shape society through culture, education, and the state. Modern Social Theory introduces you to key sociological thinkers and how their ideas continue to influence contemporary debates. Exploring Social Research deepens your methodological knowledge, focusing on ethical, political, and practical aspects of sociological investigation. In the final year, you will apply your learning in a major research project through the Sociology Dissertation. This allows you to investigate a topic of personal interest using the theories and research methods developed throughout the course. Contemporary Society and Social Futures challenges you to critically engage with recent sociological theories and assess how well they explain the features of modern societies and ongoing social change. By the end of the course, you will have developed strong analytical, research, and critical thinking skills that prepare you for further study or careers in research, social policy, criminal justice, or related fields.
