COURSE CURRICULUM

The product design degree begins in the first year with an introduction to the discipline through modules such as Introduction to Design Thinking & Product Design, where students explore the field’s scope and begin to develop their own working style. In Designing Through Modelling, students gain hands-on experience with various modelling techniques and understand their purposes within the design process. Critical & Contextual Studies 1 provides a theoretical framework, allowing students to appreciate the cultural, ethical, and historical contexts of design while developing academic writing and critical thinking skills. The Design Process introduces essential methodologies like iterative design and systems thinking, forming the foundation for project-based learning. Human Centred Design Research deepens this understanding by encouraging students to consider user needs and contexts when generating and refining design concepts. Responsible Design challenges students to address environmental and social justice issues through sustainable thinking and system-level design considerations. In the second year, students begin to engage with real-world challenges through External Context Briefs 1 and 2, responding to live or simulated briefs from external stakeholders, presenting solutions, and gaining confidence in applying their design process. Design for Manufacture enhances technical knowledge, covering materials and production methods from bespoke craftsmanship to mass production. Critical & Contextual Studies 2 builds on the previous year’s theory, examining broader socio-political and technological factors influencing design and innovation. Design Futures supports professional development by encouraging reflection on progress and helping students align their design identity with future career aspirations. In the final year, students focus on real-world application through Design for the Real World, which places their practice in a specific context through a client brief. The Final Major Project allows for a fully self-directed investigation, shaped by individual interests and professional goals. The degree concludes with Product Launch, where students prepare for industry by producing professional documentation, promotional material, and exhibiting their work.
