COURSE CURRICULUM

In the first year of the Primary Education course, students begin to build a foundation in core teaching principles and curriculum knowledge. The module Language, Communication & Literacy explores how children develop literacy and language skills, laying the groundwork for effective teaching of reading, writing, and communication. Alongside this, Developing Mathematical Understanding introduces key mathematical concepts and strategies for teaching number, calculation, and problem-solving at the primary level. Emerging Understanding of the Curriculum broadens students' knowledge of the wider primary curriculum, helping them understand subject structures and national expectations. Pedagogy, Policy & Philosophy: Becoming a Student Teacher allows students to reflect on their role in education, introducing them to the values, policies, and pedagogical approaches that underpin teaching. These theoretical modules are supported by School Placement & Practice, where students apply what they have learned in a real classroom environment, developing practical skills and building confidence under the guidance of experienced teachers. In the second year, the course deepens subject knowledge with modules such as Embedding Curriculum Through STEM Subjects and Embedding Curriculum Through ARTS Subjects. These modules focus on how to teach science, technology, engineering, mathematics, art, music, and drama through creative, integrated approaches. Pedagogy, Policy & Philosophy: Becoming an Inclusive Practitioner further develops professional awareness, particularly in supporting children with diverse needs and backgrounds. School Placement & Practice in this year involves longer periods in school and greater teaching responsibility, helping students move towards independence in the classroom. In the final year, the emphasis is on refining practice and preparing for a professional teaching career. Securing the Curriculum focuses on consolidating subject knowledge and teaching approaches, while Focusing on Broader Curriculum ensures confidence in delivering all areas of the primary curriculum. Pedagogy, Policy & Philosophy: Becoming a Research-Informed Professional encourages engagement with current educational research, and the final School Placement & Practice offers an extended opportunity to demonstrate readiness for qualified teacher status.
