COURSE CURRICULUM
This politics and international relations course offers a comprehensive exploration of key contemporary political, social, and economic issues through theoretical, historical, and practical lenses. In the first year, students are introduced to foundational modules such as Politics, Ethics & Justice, where they engage with concepts like freedom, equality, and rights, forming the basis for understanding political theory in practice. Political Movements & Ideologies delves into the core beliefs and debates that shape ideologies such as liberalism, conservatism, and socialism. World Politics presents an overview of global political developments from the early 20th century to the present, tracing the evolution of the international system and the rise of major powers. Introduction to Political Economy explores critical historical and modern economic theories, while Introduction to Governance focuses on how decisions are made and implemented by various institutions, primarily in the UK and US. In year two, students expand their understanding of global and local political dynamics. They complete a voluntary placement through the Active Citizenship module, gaining real-world experience, and explore structural inequalities in the Global Inequalities module. Students can then choose specialist modules tailored to their pathway, such as Decolonising Politics, Britain in the World, Environment & World Politics, Political Economy of Development, Peacebuilding & Conflict Resolution, International Human Rights, or Slavery & Unfree Labour. These options deepen critical understanding and analytical skills within chosen areas such as international relations, global development, or human rights. In the final year, all students complete a dissertation, applying theoretical, methodological, and empirical tools to a topic of personal and academic interest. Governing Globalisation introduces debates around global governance and world order. Optional modules like Policy Making, Making Sense of British Politics, Rethinking Diplomacy, Migration & Displacement, and Resist! Confronting State Harm allow further specialization aligned with individual aspirations. The course develops transferable skills in critical thinking, research, communication, and policy analysis, preparing graduates for careers in public service, international development, law, advocacy, or further study.
